Description - There are about 19 really great lakes for fishing in Georgia. Of course there are more, but we will focus on the more popular ones for this description. Four of these are located on the Alabama border. Seminole lies southwest, a 37,500-acre reservoir known for its excellent sport fishing. The lake is shallow, but natural lime sink ponds have left areas of cool, clear water with a variety of fish. The threatened gopher tortoise, the only tortoise native to Georgia, makes its home along a 2.2-mile nature trail designed to interpret the wiregrass community habitat. Walter F. George, features four campgrounds, day use areas, hiking trails, boat docks and launches in a pristine water environment that offers a beautiful backdrop for numerous recreational activities. Looking more to the center of the state you'll find such jewels as Richard B. Russell which offers some of the state's finest fishing and boating. All facilities are designed for wheelchair accessibility, including the swimming beach. The state park's campground and fully equipped cottages are located on or near the water's edge for a relaxing getaway. A nature trail follows the shoreline to one of the oldest steel pin bridges in the area, loops through the adjoining woods and returns to the beach. Connecting trails link most park facilities. Several Indian sites were excavated near the park in 1980 before the lake was filled, indicating that Paleo-Indians lived in the area more than 10,000 years ago. This area is now called Racker's Bottom and lies deep within the waters of Lake Richard B. Russell.
Just north of Russell is The Corps' newest lake project on the Savannah River, Iying between J. Strom Thurmond Lake to the south and Hartwell to the north, Russell is one of the finest fishing lakes in the Southeast, offering both cold and warm water fisheries. Sidney Lanier and Buford Dam, located in northeast Georgia, were built for the benefit of the public. This facility works to provide electric power, water, flood protection, and navigation while providing recreational opportunities to millions of visitors, as well as a sanctuary for fish, animal, and plant life.
